Open Inquiry 1: Fibre Arts

I am inspired by movements to “go analog” and the way that creating things with my hands has personally affected my learning to consider how I can use this in my own teaching. I want to explore fibre arts, including dying and creating items from start to finish. Previously working on a farm where we had to shear the sheep once a year, I had an A-Ha moment where I saw the raw wool and made the connection to the yarn I had been buying while first learning to crochet. I am interested in exploring how we can connect to our art, the land and our learning through hands-on creation.

I am a teacher candidate inquiring about both personal and professional interests to build my future career in education. Before deciding to pursue education, I studied both Permaculture and herbalism, after which I became a manager of a small farm focused on food and herb production as well as animal and land care. While I loved this work and found it fulfilling, I didn’t have financial security and began imagining ways that I could transfer my skills and passions to education. I will use this platform to explore ideas around education and ways of integrating what I learnt about land and people care into my teaching.
